Sports-entertainment's 15 most crushing loses

The most unsettling thing about John Cena’s savaging at the meaty hands of Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2014 — besides, y’know, the 16 German suplexes — was the faraway sound of a lone child chanting, “Let’s go Cena!” as his hero got manhandled before his hopeful eyes.

It was a disturbing scene, but instances of ultimate humility like that are where the true nature of our favorite Superstars shines through. For some, these debilitating losses represent a new foundation from which to rise again. For other Superstars, though, these shortfalls signify failure not only to themselves, but to the WWE Universe as a whole.

But which defeats were the most devastating? Join WWE.com as we count down the 15 most crushing losses ever experienced in WWE.

15.) Randy Orton cashes in on Daniel Bryan (SummerSlam 2013)

The sports-entertainment equivalent of a kick to the groin from a steel-toed boot, the conclusion of SummerSlam 2013 saw Daniel Bryan go from a conquering underdog to a bowl of chow in a matter of seconds when Randy Orton emerged to cash in his Money in the Bank contract on The Beard, who had ridden a near-unprecedented groundswell of fan support to flying-knee the WWE Title right off of John Cena's meaty waist.

It was a sucker-punch Pedigree from guest ref (and, at that point, vocal Bryan advocate) Triple H that secured The Viper's prize and kick started the beginning of what we now know as The Authority. Of course, the better part of a year later, Bryan would get his glory when he beat Orton, Triple H and a returning Batista all in the same WrestleMania to become the undisputed WWE World Heavyweight Champion, but man, did that seem a long way off in August.

14.) Batista calls it quits (Over the Limit 2010)

After Batista defeated John Cena at Elimination Chamber 2010, a rivalry began that would define both Superstars. Their careers had run parallel to each other ever since they won their first championships at WrestleMania 21. But much to Batista’s dismay, Cena was labeled ”The Man." Batista set out to prove that he and Cena weren’t equals — The Animal knew in his warrior’s heart that he was better than The Champ.

Having lost to the Cenation leader at WrestleMania XXVI, Batista’s last chance to prove himself was in an ”I Quit” Match at Over The Limit 2010. His goal was to do the impossible and make the man whose mantra is “Never give up” say, “I quit.” Instead, it was Batista who muttered those demoralizing words. The next night on Raw, The Animal couldn’t deal with the shame of his loss and once again said, “I quit,” leaving WWE for good.

13.) Lita loses her farwell match (Survivor Series 2006)

Carrying the vaunted Women’s Championship into battle against Mickie James at Survivor Series 2006, the then-egotistical Lita knew when she arrived at Philadelphia’s Wachovia Center that the night’s bout would be her swan song. That knowledge, though, did little to soften the blow when James pinned the controversial Diva’s shoulders to the mat for the three-count.

Losing her title on the final night of her career, an irate Lita, claiming to be “The Greatest Women’s Champion of All Time,” lambasted the Philadelphia crowd for a vocal show of disrespect for the departing Diva. To add insult to, well, insult, Cryme Tyme emerged from the locker room area with a box full of Lita’s most personal belongings and proceeded to hock the items to WWE Universe members at ringside. Despite what she might have hoped, Lita’s final night in WWE was punctuated not by pomp and circumstance, but by shame and humiliation.

12.) Bret Hart has a steel cage meltdown (Raw, March 17, 1997)

Bret “Hit Man” Hart was frustrated in the lead-up to WrestleMania 13, and the circumstances of his Steel Cage Match loss to WWE Champion Sid on the March 17, 1997, edition of Raw only made matters worse for the irate Excellence of Execution.

Hardly a fair fight, the match was interrupted by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and The Undertaker, who brawled with both competitors at the top of the cage. Amidst the fracas, Hart attempted to exit the enclosure and claim Sid’s WWE Title, but The Phenom slammed the door on Hart’s head, which allowed the WWE Champion to escape the cage and retain his prize.

The “Hit Man” didn’t hide his discontent not only with the outcome of the bout but with WWE as a whole when he was approached by Mr. McMahon for a post-match interview. After harshly shoving The Chairman down to the mat, Hart lambasted WWE management in a profanity-laden rant that accused the company of turning a “blind eye” to injustices against him.

11.) The Undertaker defeated Hulk Hogan (Survivor Series 1991)

For a generation of young WWE Universe members, Hulk Hogan was a legendary hero who conquered the forces of evil in defense of the greater good. So when The Undertaker defeated The Immortal One to gain possession of the WWE Championship at Survivor Series 1991, Hulkamaniacs around the globe weren’t just disappointed — they were utterly devastated.

With the help of Hogan’s rival Ric Flair and the nefarious Paul Bearer, The Deadman reaped sports-entertainment’s most illustrious prize for the very first time at WWE’s annual fall classic. Throughout Michigan’s Joe Louis Arena, red-and-yellow-clad children had tears in their eyes as commentator Bobby “The Brain” Heenan pronounced the death of Hulkamania.

The unjust circumstances of Hogan’s cruel defeat at Survivor Series prompted WWE President Jack Tunney to announce a WWE Championship rematch just six days later at This Tuesday in Texas, where Hogan reclaimed the title and restored the faith of Hulkamaniacs everywhere.

10.) Ultimate Warrior retires Randy Savage (WrestleMania VII)

Not even five consecutive top-rope elbow drops could help “Macho King” stave off retirement at WrestleMania VII, where the charismatic and colorful competitor squared off against Ultimate Warrior with his career on the line.

Exhausted against the seemingly unstoppable might of Warrior, Savage ultimately suffered his greatest WrestleMania defeat, his former girlfriend Miss Elizabeth looking on from the crowd.

Making this loss all the more devastating for Savage was a sinister sneak attack from his manager Sensational Sherri, who took out her frustrations on the newly former WWE Superstar. This was hardly the proper sendoff for one of the most iconic ring warriors of any era.

Yet, through tragedy came triumph as Elizabeth charged to the ring and warded off the ravenous Sherri, rekindling one of sports-entertainment’s most celebrated romances in the process.

9.) Stephanie McMahon turns on her father (Armageddon 1999)

On the Nov. 29, 1999, edition of Raw, Stephanie McMahon was to marry Test. However, moments before the ceremony, Triple H shocked Mr. McMahon and the world when he revealed he already married the “Billion Dollar Princess” in Las Vegas. The irate Mr. McMahon challenged Triple H to a match at Armageddon for dishonoring the family name.

If Mr. McMahon defeated Triple H in the Street Fight, the marriage between Stephanie and The Game would be annulled. If Triple H defeated his new father-in-law, he would receive another opportunity at the WWE Championship.

After a tooth-and-nail war, Mr. McMahon — with some assistance from Mankind — looked to finish off The Game with a sledgehammer, but Stephanie entered the ring and begged her father to let her finish the job. But she couldn’t muster the courage to destroy Triple H, and instead The Cerebral Assassin grabbed the sledgehammer and smashed and pinned WWE's Chairman.

Then, in a shocking moment, it appeared as if Triple H was going to attack his own wife. Instead, the two embraced in the center of the ring in a stunning twist, revealing they had been in cahoots all along, marking the official beginning of the McMahon-Helmsley era.

8.) Goldberg goes 173-1 (Starrcade 1998)

Aside from The Undertaker’s now-defunct WrestleMania Streak, the most impressive string of victories in sports-entertainment history is undoubtedly Goldberg’s. Beginning with his WCW debut in 1997, the former NFL player speared and Jackhammered his way through each of his opponents, amassing an unbelievable 173-0 record. Goldberg even defeated Hulk Hogan to win the WCW Title in a sold-out Georgia Dome in the summer of 1998. Throughout the remainder of that year, Goldberg would defeat the likes of Sting, Diamond Dallas Page and Big Show.

Then came the infamous main event of Starrcade 1998. In a No Disqualification Match against nWo Wolfpac leader Kevin Nash, it seemed as though Goldberg would be extending his streak to 174 wins. Following failed attempts at interference from Disco Inferno and Bam Bam Bigelow, Goldberg prepared to spear Nash when Scott Hall - dressed as a security guard - appeared on the ring apron and used a taser to take down the champion. Taking advantage of the situation, Nash Jackknife Powerbombed the champion and Goldberg’s streak came to an end.

7.) Kane loses his mask (Raw, June 23, 2003)

Inside Madison Square Garden, Kane looked to have the World Heavyweight Championship within reach and Triple H in his clutches. But when Randy Orton ran into the ring and delivered a low-blow to the challenger, it gave The King of Kings the opening he needed to steal a victory in a match where Kane’s mask was on the line.

Despite his hesitation, Kane lived up to his end of the bargain. As a jam-packed Garden — and his tag team partner, Rob Van Dam — looked on The Big Red Monster reluctantly removed his mask, revealing his scarred face to the world. The WWE Universe was in awe, setting Kane off in a rage as he attacked RVD with an unbridled fury. From then on, Superstars had to watch their backs because The Big Red Monster was angrier than ever.

6.) John Cena fails to defeat The Rock (WrestleMania XXVIII)

It was the WrestleMania match that John Cena couldn’t afford to lose, but on April 1, 2012, the iconic Superstar was left sitting on the entrance ramp watching his rival, The Rock, celebrate a hometown victory in Miami. The balmy spring air offered no comfort for the fallen Cenation leader.

In many ways, this debilitating shortfall came not at the hands of The Great One, but Cena himself. With The Rock prone in the center of the ring, Cena intended to humiliate The Rock by finishing him off with The People’s Elbow in a brazen mockery of The Brahma Bull’s signature maneuver. The plan backfired as Cena ran right into a Rock Bottom that sealed his fate.

Cena’s WrestleMania XXVIII defeat sent his personal and professional life into a tailspin, and it was not until his Show of Shows rematch with The Rock the following year — this time with the WWE Championship on the line — that he could truly attain redemption.

5.) The Undertaker retires Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania XXVI)

In a WrestleMania rematch that many believed was destined to happen, two of WWE’s most iconic Superstars went to war again at WrestleMania XXVI.

Although it seemed inconceivable, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker outdid their epic confrontation from 2009 — a match that was deemed universally as the “Match of the Year.” The sold-out crowd in Phoenix erupted with chants of "This is awesome!" and "Thank you, Shawn!"

Toward the end of the hard-fought battle, “Mr. WrestleMania” kicked out of a crushing chokeslam and the Tombstone by the narrowest of margins. But it was another devastating Tombstone that silenced Michaels' career once and for all. In his 17th and final WrestleMania as an in-ring competitor, HBK motioned to the WWE Universe, professing his undying gratitude and love. And, like a true ring warrior, he exited the stadium in the Valley of the Sun with his head held high.

4.) Ivan Koloff ends Bruno Sammartino's historic title reign (January 18, 1971)

The enduring detail about the night Ivan Koloff defeated Bruno Sammartino to end The Italian Superman’s untouchable 2,803-day reign as WWE Champion was that the 20,000 people in attendance fell completely silent. They didn’t cheer. They didn’t boo. They went mute. The quiet was such that you could hear the trains rumbling in and out of the station below Madison Square Garden. New York City fans had watched Bruno take on all comers for seven years, eight months and one day. They thought his run would never end. When it did, they weren't prepared to deal with it, because they hadn't dealt with it before. It would be more than 30 years before the outcome of a WWE match elicited the same response, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

3.) Shawn Michaels retires Ric Flair (WrestleMania XXIV)

Emotions were running high leading up to Shawn Michaels’ battle with his mentor, Ric Flair, at WrestleMania XXIV. The confrontation was dubbed a “Career Threatening Match,” with the stipulation that if HBK defeated the “Nature Boy,” Flair would be forced to retire.

In the final moments of the bout, HBK was primed to seal a win with Sweet Chin Music, but the remorseful look on Michaels’ face was hardly one of a victor when he finished off his idol.

“Here I was, at WrestleMania, wrestling a man who I had respected and admired so much, and knowing that the man and the professional in him wanted me at my best,” Michaels told WWE.com. “But me being at my best meant possibly ending his career. It was a very tough position for me to be in.”

The grandeur of WrestleMania compounded the indelible impact of Flair’s final WWE match — a bittersweet farewell to “The Dirtiest Player in the Game.”

2.) Bret gets screwed (Survior Series 1997)

No incident has sparked more debate among WWE fans over the years than the so-called “Montreal Screwjob” that occurred at Survivor Series 1997 — Mr. McMahon’s Machiavellian plot to wrench the WWE Championship from the grasp of Bret Hart in front of his Canadian countrymen.

With the “Hit Man’s” time in WWE running out and a jump to WCW on the immediate horizon, Mr. McMahon took drastic measures to ensure that Hart would not leave the company with its most prestigious title. At Survivor Series on Nov. 9, 1997, Hart’s challenger and longtime rival Shawn Michaels trapped the WWE Champion in his own submission hold, The Sharpshooter, as The Chairman looked on from ringside. Suddenly, Mr. McMahon ordered the referee to ring the bell, a decision that awarded HBK the WWE Title even though Hart had never tapped out.

Hart’s unfiltered reaction to this betrayal — including spitting in Mr. McMahon’s face — quickly became the stuff of legend, and the magnitude of this questionable title change sent shockwaves throughout the WWE Universe that would take more than a decade to subside

1.) Brock snaps The Streak (WrestleMania 30)

How are we ever going to get over this? It’s been more than six months since Brock Lesnar snapped The Undertaker’s 21-0 WrestleMania Streak and the collective WWE Universe is still shuffling around our empty apartments in our pajamas with the defeated slouch of a guy who just caught his girl making out with his best friend. Watching The Deadman get pinned on The Grandest Stage of Them All was like seeing your dad cry for the first time. Gutting. Completely gutting. Now here we are, hundreds of thousands of minutes later, still trying to come to terms with the night Brock broke all of our hearts. Worse yet, who knows if we ever will.

WWE Monday Night Raw Five-Point Preview: September 1, 2014

We’ve gotten to know John Cena pretty well over the last 12 years, but we’ve never seen him unleash the kind of aggression he used to lay waste to The Wyatt Family last Monday night. Brock Lesnar, you’ve been put on notice.

As the Cenation leader remains laser-focused on prying the WWE World Heavyweight Title from The Beast Incarnate’s clutches at Night of Champions, what can the WWE Universe expect this week on Raw? WWE.com has some ideas.

1.) "Reel" Talk

Chris Jericho has a long and well-documented history with Randy Orton, making this week’s special edition of “The Highlight Reel” must-see television! What hard-hitting questions await The Viper? Can Y2J maintain control when WWE’s Apex Predator hits the ring for this anticipated interview? Jerichoholics, be sure you’ve got some fresh batteries in your light-up jackets for this one!

2.) Beast wars

John Cena might be known as one of the most jocular and kind-hearted Superstars on the current WWE roster, but don’t forget that Cena has also embodied “Ruthless Aggression” since his 2002 SmackDown debut. Last week on Raw, we saw Cena utterly dismantle The Wyatt Family — yes, thatWyatt Family — with unprecedented ferocity. Those who criticized Cena’s decision to invoke his rematch clause against Brock Lesnar at Night of Champions were silenced as Cena stood tall over The Eater of Worlds and his formidable disciples.

Whether or not The Beast Incarnate got the message Cena delivered last week remains to be seen, but the Cenation leader’s just getting started. What will be Cena’s next message to the WWE World Heavyweight Champion?

3.) Candy crushed

AJ Lee is like a box of chocolates — you never know what you’re going to get. After confusing Divas Champion Paige with an awkward hug and an unusual kiss on the hand last Monday night, AJ presented her “friend” with a heart-shaped box full of sweet treats on SmackDown that ultimately left a bad taste in the titleholder’s mouth. The Divas Champion spit out one of AJ’s gifted goodies, which was met by AJ’s creepiest gaze since, well, Monday night. Just what the heck is going on between these “frenemies”?

4.) Deconstructing The Architect

You’ve done it now, Seth. One week after taking out Dean Ambrose with a hellacious Curb Stomp onto cinder blocks, Rollins incurred the wrath of Roman Reigns, who crashed Kane and Rollins’ disrespectful “eulogy” for the missing former Shield member. Later in the night, in a poetic act of retribution, Reigns nearly beheaded Mr. Money in the Bank when he hurled a cinder block at Rollins’ skull! The Architect might have escaped the powerhouse this week, but there will come a time when Reigns will make Rollins pay for his treachery. Will we see Reigns get his hands on his former “brother” Monday night?

5.) Twisted Sister

“I wish you died in the womb!”

These are words that no sibling should ever say to another, but they crossed Nikki Bella’s lips with unsettling ease last Monday night when she lambasted her sobbing sister during a failed attempt to reconcile their crumbling relationship. Now, it’s clear the rift between The Bella Twins is far more severe than a mere family squabble, and neither Nikki nor Brie will ever be the same again.

This week on Raw, will we continue to see one of WWE’s most beloved families torn apart at the seams? Moreover, how will Brie move past her sister’s cruel words and actions that have thrown her life into turmoil since SummerSlam?

Don’t miss Raw this Monday at 8/7 CT on USA Network, and be sure to tune in to WWE Network forRaw Pre-Show at 7:30 ET!

WWE Monday Night Raw Five-Point Preview: August 25, 2014

The WWE Universe is still buzzing about the brutal beating John Cena suffered at the hands of Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. To kick off Raw, WWE Hall of Famers Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair will be in the house to weigh in on the upcoming Brock-Cena rematch at Night of Champions. And following a week of relative silence for the normally outspoken Superstar, Cena will be at Raw to address the WWE Universe. What else awaits? WWE.com offers some theories and predictions.

1.) WWE Hall of Fame Forum

Immediately following Raw Pre-Show on WWE Network, catch a very special and rare WWE Hall of Fame Forum, featuring Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair LIVE at Raw. Hear their predictions for the upcoming Cena vs. Lesnar World Title rematch at Night of Champions on Sept. 21. After Lesnar’s dominating offense, does anyone believe Cena stands a chance against The Beast Incarnate? Who thinks Cena has it in him to dethrone the new champion? Get exclusive analysis of the huge pay-per-view rematch from sports-entertainment's most decorated legends.

2.) Cena address SummerSlam mauling

John Cena didn’t have a chance. At SummerSlam, one of the most resilient Superstars in history was utterly ravaged by Brock Lesnar, a monster who maliciously toyed with Cena’s barely-conscious form for what seemed like an eternity before finally finishing off his prey with an F-5. “Hustle, Loyalty and Respect,” it seemed, was no match for Lesnar’s superhuman cruelty. Now, as WWE World Heavyweight Champion, The Beast Incarnate rules WWE without mercy, without compassion and without an ounce of remorse.

Last week on WWE Main Event, exclusively on WWE Network, Triple H announced that Cena will be exercising his rematch clause against Lesnar at Night of Champions. Is this a wise move on Cena’s part? With his SummerSlam beating fresh in his mind, Cena will address his upcoming collision with the ring’s most dangerous competitor.

3.) The World's Strongest Patriot

The Hall of Pain might have to open an international wing. As Lana was boasting about Rusev’s SummerSlam Flag Match victory over Jack Swagger last week on Raw, imposing former U.S. Olympian Mark Henry defended Old Glory by taking down “The Hero of the Russian Federation” with a thunderous World’s Strongest Slam that you could have probably felt in Moscow.

No Superstar from any nation has been able to defeat Rusev by pinfall or submission, but The Bulgarian Brute has never faced anyone quite like The World’s Strongest Man. Will Henry make The Ravishing Russian eat her words by humbling the so-called “super athlete”? Regardless, expect an international incident this week on Raw.

4.) An All-New Nikki Bella?

Last week, Nikki Bella severed her relationship with her sister Brie in a stunning act of betrayal. She cost her twin a huge match against Stephanie McMahon at SummerSlam, then went on to lambaste Brie on Raw before sending her sister to the canvas with a forceful slap.

Without her sister by her side, the bitter Bella has already reaped success, having defeated Emma on WWE Main Event last Tuesday night. How will Nikki’s new attitude pay off this week? Furthermore, will Brie be able to rebound in light of this Bella Twins rift?

5.) Rollins makes Ambrose hit the bricks

At the conclusion of one of the craziest Falls Count Anywhere Matches in Raw history last Monday night, Seth Rollins forced the referee to stop the bout when he Curb Stomped Dean Ambrose onto a pile of cinder blocks. Thanks in no small part to an assist from Kane, Mr. Money in the Bank sent his nemesis out of the arena on a stretcher and, to date, Ambrose’s whereabouts are unknown.

Having dispatched the perennial thorn in his side, where does Rollins go from here? Does he dare attempt to cash in his Money in the Bank contract on WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar? Will he aim to crush another Superstar under his combat boot to assert himself as WWE’s dominant rising star? Now that Ambrose appears to be out of his two-toned hair, look for Rollins’ hot streak to continue this week.

Don’t miss Raw this Monday at 8/7 CT on USA Network, and be sure to tune in to WWE Network for Raw Pre-Show at 7:30 ET and Backstage Pass immediately following Raw.

1.) Can RVD avoid The Viper's strike?

After being defeated by Roman Reigns at SummerSlam and finding himself on the losing side of aSix-Man Tag Team Match on Raw, Randy Orton will look to evoke his venomous side tonight on SmackDown when he slithers into the squared circle against Rob Van Dam.

With the intense Orton no doubt obsessing about his loss to Reigns at The Biggest Part of the Summer, will The Viper be able to sink his fangs into the innovative RVD? Find out tonight when these two former WWE Champions faceoff in a huge head-on collision!

2.) Will Rollins Stomp out Swagger?

Tuesday night on WWE Main Event – exclusively on WWE Network – Jack Swagger and Seth Rollins were involved in an intense confrontation after The Architect was caught making some disparaging remarks about The Real American. As a result, the former Money in the Bank Ladder Match winner and the current Mr. Money in the Bank will settle their differences inside the ring tonight at 8/7 CT on Syfy!

Will the Superstar behind “We the People” make his new foe tap out to the Patriot Lock or will Rollins once again stomp out his competition?

3.) Where in the world is Dean Ambrose?

Monday night on Raw, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins continued their summer-long war as they battled in a Falls Count Anywhere Match, chosen by the WWE Universe on the WWE App. The cruel contest proved to be the breaking point for these two heated rivals as Mr. Money in the Bank Curb Stomped the unstable Ambrose right through a pile of cinder blocks.

WWE.com reported earlier this week that the unstable Ambrose refused medical treatment following Raw and is now missing. With WWE COO Triple H telling Michael Cole, “we will probably never see or hear from Dean Ambrose again,” in an exclusive WWE.com interview, the question remains, where is the volatile Superstar and is he, in fact, gone for good?  Don’t miss SmackDown tonight to see if the unstable grappler resurfaces or, at least, if there are any updates with his still developing situation.

4.) Can Paige keep her sights set on Natalya?

Paige turned the tables on AJ Lee at SummerSlam, winning back the Divas Championship from her “frenemy.” However, the 22-year-old titleholder found herself entangled in The Black Widow’s web of retribution on Raw when she lost a non-title match to Natalya following her sly rival’s skipping distraction.

Tonight on SmackDown, the British beauty will again face The Queen of Harts. Will AJ show up tonight to disrupt The Diva of Tomorrow? Don’t miss SmackDown on Syfy at 8/7 CT to find out

5.) Will Stardust & Goldust have Erick Rowan & Luke Harper seeing stars?

Stardust & Goldust picked up a huge non-title victory over WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos onRaw. Now, the bizarre brotherhood has an opportunity to further elevate their star status within the WWE Universe when they face the frightening pair of Luke Harper & Erick Rowan on SmackDown.

Don’t miss SmackDown tonight at 8/7 CT on Syfy to see if a victory is written in the stars for WWE’s cosmic duo.

The next voice of WWE?

Tom Phillips is feeling a little blue.

We mean that in a good way, though. The workhorse voice of NXT and WWE Main Event is getting his big primetime break as the third man in SmackDown’s announce booth, joining the Michael Cole-JBL tandem that has provided the voice of the blue brand over the last couple of years. Phillips made his debut this past Tuesday at the tapings in Phoenix, Ariz., and by all accounts was a rousing success.

“It was incredible to do that in front of the WWE Universe here in Phoenix,” Phillips told WWE.com after the taping had concluded. “They are loud, they are having a blast. Sitting out there with Michael Cole and JBL, they’re pretty intense, but it was fun, man. I was a little nervous, but it was fun.”

According to Cole, the promotion of Phillips — previously a standout on the commentary teams ofWWE NXT (a job he says he “loved”) and WWE Main Event on WWE Network — wasn’t just a reward for the prolific play-by-play man, but part of an ongoing youth movement to carry WWE commentary into the next generation.

“Over the years, you’ve had Vince and Jesse and Gorilla and Bobby and J.R. and King and John and I. You need to put your announce teams together to get us into the next decade. We’re not going to do this for the rest of our lives. It’s just real important to get the young kids going,” said Cole. “Tom works hard, he’s got a great work ethic, he’s dedicated to the product and to the business, and he’s doing really well. He’s really earned this opportunity.”

Cole went on to explain that he and JBL will take on the roles of analysts while Phillips will act as the “host,” providing play-by-play and what Cole refers to as the “nuts and bolts” of the commentary job.

“It’ll be his show,” said Cole.

That’s a tall order for the young announcer to fill, and he’ll certainly need to be on his game to hang with the Type-A personalities currently populating the booth.

“[Cole and JBL are] two very intense personalities, two guys that have been in this business forever,” said Phillips. “I’ve learned a ton from Michael Cole over the two years that I’ve been here, and I wouldn’t be here without his influence and his support and his help over the two years. To work with him and JBL was a big step up, and I’ve got to step my game up to work with these guys.”

For Cole’s part, he isn’t particularly worried about the young man who could one day become the next “Voice of WWE.”

“He’s got the fundamentals down, and it’s time for a change.”

WWE Monday Night Raw Five-Point Preview: August 18, 2014

2014 might very well be the year of Brock Lesnar. At WrestleMania, The Beast Incarnate did the impossible and ended The Undertaker’s legendary undefeated streak at The Show of Shows. Last night at SummerSlam, Lesnar gave John Cena a one-sided beating to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

On Raw, what could very well come to be known as the “Lesnar Era” continues. What will happen 24 hours after a new ruler ascended to WWE’s throne? WWE.com places some bets before Monday night’s hottest show rolls into Las Vegas.

1.) The Beast is Here!

Paul Heyman promised that Brock Lesnar would “feast” on John Cena’s WWE World Heavyweight Title at SummerSlam, and The Beast Incarnate gorged himself at night’s end. Now that the conqueror has vanquished this generation’s most indomitable Superstar, what’s next for Lesnar? Also, will Cena respond to his crushing defeat in The Biggest Fight of the Summer?

2.) Et tu, Nikki?

The Bella Twins used to fool opponents with their strategic use of “Twin Magic,” but there was nothing magical about what transpired at SummerSlam during Brie Bella’s emotionally charged clash with Stephanie McMahon. Following weeks of Stephanie’s underhanded attacks and cruel mind games, it was Brie’s own flesh and blood that would ensure the “Total Divas” star’s defeat in Los Angeles with a surprise attack. How will Nikki explain her unfathomable actions toward her twin sister?

3.) Buzzards circle Hollywood

Even though Chris Jericho had banished Erick Rowan & Luke Harper from ringside during his anticipated rematch against Bray Wyatt, legions of Jerichoholics witnessed Y2J fall victim to Sister Abigail’s kiss, spelling defeat for the charismatic Superstar in his most barbaric battle with The Eater of Worlds to date. Will Jericho attain retribution against the backwater preacher on Raw, or will “The Man of 1,000 Truths” seek out a new target tonight?

4.) Rise of Roman's Empire

Does WWE have a new “apex predator”? After Roman Reigns’ incredible victory over Randy Orton at SummerSlam, it seems as though the powerhouse is destined for championship glory in the near future. However, it’s equally likely that The Viper has some unfinished business with Reigns. As Orton reels following his SummerSlam defeat, expect some serious backlash against Reigns or whoever else gets in his way.

5.) Corporate Espionage

Kane might have again traded his demonic mask for corporate  garb, but the brute has lost none of his malice in the transition. At SummerSlam, Kane’s interference and the ensuing brawl prevented Dean Ambrose from getting even with Seth Rollins, allowing Mr. Money in the Bank to score a tainted victory over his former partner. Denied satisfaction in last night’s Lumberjack Match, the unstable Ambrose will be looking for payback, but who will he go after first, Kane or Rollins?

Don’t miss Raw tonight at 8/7 CT on USA Network, and be sure to tune in to WWE Network for Raw Pre-Show at 7:30 ET!

WWE.com SummerSlam Predictions

It’s almost here! SummerSlam, one of the most widely anticipated events of the year, takes over Los Angeles and WWE Network Sunday, and The Biggest Party of the Summer surely isn’t lacking the big-fight feel.

Heck, the main event is nothing short of The Biggest Fight of the Summer! Yet more important than that, the question remains: Who’s going to come out on top? Will Cena or Brock be the WWE World Heavyweight Champion when the dust clears, and what about the rest of this Sunday’s stacked card? Who’s stopping by the pay window, and who’s going to want to erase SummerSlam from memory?

Find out who WWE Hall of Famer Howard Finkel, extreme icon Joey Styles and the editors at WWE.com picked to win in these SummerSlam predictions, and add your own in the comments section below.

1.) Lumberjack Match
Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins

@JoeyStyles: Seth Rollins has the backing of The Authority. Dean Ambrose is unstable. Rollins has the Money in the Bank contract. Ambrose is unstable. Rollins is an aerial daredevil. Ambrose is unstable. Rollins is in unmatched physical condition. Ambrose is unstable. If this was going to be a wrestling match, I would choose Seth Rollins. However, this Lumberjack Match is a very personal war. As the former voice of ECW who saw Sabu conquer the likes of Shane Douglas, Rob Van Dam and even Cactus Jack, I’m choosing the unstable one. WINNER: Dean Ambrose

@HowardFinkel: We are finally going to see these two friends-turned-foes do battle this Sunday. Rollins and Ambrose have nowhere to run with the lumberjacks surrounding the ring. That should work in the favor of Ambrose, who will be able to take the measure of Rollins in what I feel will be a closely contested match. WINNER: Dean Ambrose

Ryan Murphy: I can’t be the only one who thought Dean Ambrose was going to go a little more extreme when he chose the stipulation for this match, can I? I was sure we were getting an FMW-approved Double Hell Death Match — not a brawl you’d see in Saskatchewan before a pancake breakfast. Still, it’ll be awesome — and it’ll be Seth’s to lose. Guy’s greasier than a wall Slimer just busted through. WINNER: Seth Rollins

James Wortman: Timberrrrrr! At SummerSlam, Seth Rollins will have nowhere to hide when he faces the erratic Dean Ambrose in a Lumberjack Match, where the ring will be surrounded by Superstars scorned by The Shield over the years. The volatile environment of this bout could be dangerous for both of these former Hounds of Justice, but Ambrose seems to thrive under hazardous conditions — heck, he seems to love them. With chaos working in Ambrose’s favor, expect the unstable Superstar to unleash Dirty Deeds on Mr. Money in the Bank in this intensely personal encounter. WINNER:Dean Ambrose

John Clapp: As enticing as it is for Ambrose to corner Rollins — which he has effectively done, thanks to the creepily coined “wall of flesh” — I think it was a tactical error to choose a Lumberjack Match. Rollins can’t match Ambrose’s fury or fists, but you’d better believe he can pin Ambrose, especially if the action is contained to the ring. Barring Rollins being fed to lumberjacks like chum tossed at a Sharknado (something I doubt Ambrose would be generous enough to do), the savvy Mr. Money in the Bank prevails. WINNER: Seth Rollins

2.) WWE Divas Championship Match
AJ Lee (c) vs. Paige

@JoeyStyles: Wow! Has Paige out-crazed AJ, or has the battling Brit’s family history in sports-entertainment made her a very young master strategist? I think it’s the latter. Either way, most of what Paige is doing to AJ is what AJ did to countless other Divas, and even Superstars for that matter. I can’t muster any sympathy for AJ, but she has had my admiration since her NXT debut. Love or hate AJ, she is as complete a competitor as WWE has in the Divas division. She was the longest-reigning WWE Divas Champion of all time, and she may break her own record after she turns back the challenge of Paige. WINNER: AJ Lee

@HowardFinkel: I think that you can trim “fr” from the word “frenemies,” as it relates to AJ and Paige — that’s clear to see. I believe all that has transpired between these two actually will favor AJ, for let’s not forget that her moods can change like a chameleon changes colors. That can and will work to her advantage, as she will retain her title against the upstart Brit. WINNER: AJ Lee

Ryan Murphy: I’m still not sure if this whole AJ/Paige thing is a “Single White Female,” I-want-your-life-and-possibly-a-lock-of-your-hair obsession or a reality TV-style “I’m not here to make friends” backstabbing. Either way, I love it and I’d gladly watch these two trade Moolah Whips from here to WrestleMania. So, in the interest of keeping this thing going, I’m voting for Paige. WINNER: Paige

James Wortman: AJ Lee has always been the master of the mind game, but Paige has done her homework, hasn’t she? On Raw, Paige’s bizarre-yet-successful interruption of the Divas Champion’s bout against Eva Marie led many to believe that The Diva of Tomorrow has taken up semi-permanent residence in her “frenemy’s” psyche. Oh yeah, there was also that one time Paige threw AJ off the SmackDown stage and gave the titleholder a wicked case of whiplash. This anticipated rematch between two of WWE’s most talked-about Divas will be a true back-and-forth battle, but Paige’s next chapter is about to truly begin. WINNER: Paige

John Clapp: I’m among those who think Paige’s antics are part of a strategic ploy and not indicative of more worrisome behavior that would require intervention by Gary Spivey. Mind games, however, will only get Paige so far. The fate of the Divas Championship will be decided in the ring, and when it comes to mechanics and intuition, I think AJ is still a step ahead, barely, of The Diva of Tomorrow. And unlike last month’s duel, which AJ won by pinfall, I bet this match ends with a submission.WINNER: AJ Lee

3.) Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt

@JoeyStyles: What does Bray Wyatt know that Chris Jericho and the rest of us don’t? Why did The Eater of Worlds intentionally get Luke Harper disqualified against Y2J? Did Wyatt discover a weakness in Jericho? Does the man who claims to have the whole world in his hands also have the correct game plan to win? I don’t know. What I do know is that Wyatt lost to John Cena at WrestleMania 30 and needs to beat Jericho at SummerSlam to climb the next rung on the ladder. As a young and hungry Superstar, there can be nothing else at the center of his deranged mind. Jericho, on the other hand, has less at stake. To the six-time World Champion, who also now leads a Billboard chart-rocking band in Fozzy and hosts a top rated podcast in “Talk is Jericho,” a loss won’t even be a footnote in his career. A loss by Wyatt, meanwhile, could make his career a footnote. WINNER: Bray Wyatt

@HowardFinkel: Here’s how I envision this match: With both Erick Rowan and Luke Harper both banned from ringside, the advantage now goes to ... Bray Wyatt! Not having his disciples present will motivate Wyatt to turn it up a notch and show he can win this very important outing all by himself. It will not be easy against the smarts and savvy that Jericho possesses, but I think that Wyatt will get it done. WINNER: Bray Wyatt

Ryan Murphy: Bray Wyatt’s loss to Chris Jericho at WWE Battleground was one of those upsets that nearly broke the internet. As much as it was a blatant overreaction — not to mention an insult to the talents of Y2J — it may have also been a necessary means of refocusing Wyatt. A preacher has to be twice as convincing when he thinks the people in his congregation are no longer listening. WINNER: Bray Wyatt

James Wortman: Bray Wyatt is clearly one of the most manipulative and dangerous forces in WWE history, but can “The Man of 1,000 Truths” truly match wits with “The Man of 1,001 Holds”? Y2J might not always be the most serious guy in the room, but The Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rolla has about as many sides to his personality as he does podcast subscribers. You never quite know which Jericho you’re going to get, and even though Wyatt nearly felled Y2J before, the silver-tongued preacher can do little to prepare for what the seasoned veteran has in store. With his sinister minions Erick Rowan & Luke Harper banned from ringside, Wyatt’s going to have to eat his all of his cryptic words. WINNER: Chris Jericho

John Clapp: The qualities that make Bray Wyatt lethal — the unbridled ambition, fearlessness and self-assurance — are the same qualities that could cause his downfall at SummerSlam. It’s not that Wyatt needs Harper or Rowan at ringside to defeat Jericho. I think the sinister sermonizer is entirely capable of doing that on his own. But the hubris he displayed in getting Harper disqualified on Raw, if left unchecked at SummerSlam, will only lead to one result: a Codebreaker. WINNER: Chris Jericho

4.) Flag Match
Jack Swagger vs. Rusev

@JoeyStyles: Jack Swagger has done what nobody before him has: He has made Rusev look vulnerable, and that must be eating away at the 300-pound brute. There is no combat training or powerlifting exercises to strengthen the tendons and ligaments in the ankle. Even if there were, the deceptively strong Swagger could easily tear all of them with his Patriot Lock, a hold he has learned to apply from almost any position.

Something else to keep in mind is that Rusev was born in Bulgaria and migrated to Russia for some reason — perhaps money, perhaps an invitation from the Russian government, perhaps simply to be with Lana. (Hell, I’d consider it. Wouldn’t you?) On the other hand, Swagger was born and raised in the United States. The only flag he has ever saluted is the Stars and Stripes. Fueled by the pride of American exceptionalism, I think Swagger will take his place as WWE’s defender of the American flag and all that it stands for, like Sgt. Slaughter and “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan before him. USA! USA! USA!WINNER: Jack Swagger

@HowardFinkel: I look forward to this match, and I continue to be impressed with the ring presence of Lana’s protégé, Rusev. However, Swagger has similarly continued to impress by hanging tough with The Bulgarian Brute. He’ll once again give Rusev more than he bargained for, but in the end, Rusev will still wave the flag of his country. WINNER: Rusev

Ryan Murphy: I’ll be the first one to admit that I didn’t think Jack Swagger could reinvent himself as an American hero (again) and go on the greatest run of his still-nascent career. Regardless, I’m completely onboard with Captain Jack now, and I’m backing him against the Russian at SummerSlam. After all, it’s the American thing to do. WINNER: Jack Swagger

James Wortman: The corn-fed Oklahoman powerhouse defends Old Glory against the imposing Hero of the Russian Federation, but can his unparalleled patriotism prevail? Swagger is the sole Superstar to earn any kind of victory over The Bulgarian Brute — albeit a disqualification win — and it seems as though the Zeb Colter-led Real American maintains an edge going into this Flag Match. No matter what Lana barks from ringside, if Swagger locks in his submission hold and evades Rusev’s Accolade, he’ll also be waving the Stars and Stripes in victory at SummerSlam. WINNER: Jack Swagger

John Clapp: The support for Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter gives me goose bumps. Every time Zeb leads the WWE Universe in crying out “We the People,” my grin grows a little wider. That’s why it pains me so to predict that Rusev will reassert himself as an unstoppable force in Los Angeles — possibly at the expense of Swagger’s already-hurt ribs. WINNER: Rusev

5.) WWE Intercontinental Championship Match
The Miz (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler

@JoeyStyles: If you get caught up in The Miz’s self-adoration (fueled by his new status as the star of WWE Studios’ “The Marine”) and Dolph Ziggler’s showing off, you could forget that they’re former World Champions, respectively. This sleeper match could steal SummerSlam! That said, Ziggler is amazing at everything he does, especially wrestling … which he claims is the fourth best thing he does. I expect The Showoff to win the match, but not the Intercontinental Championship when The Miz, who senses he is about to lose the title, intentionally gets himself counted out or disqualified.WINNER: Dolph Ziggler

@HowardFinkel: Last month, I chose Ziggler to win the Battleground Battle Royal, and he did … or so we thought. Enter The Miz, who laid low on the outside and pulled a fast one on Dolph. Memories are not short in that case. This Sunday, in The Miz’s adopted hometown of Los Angeles, I believe that The Showoff will steal the show and capture the Intercontinental Championship in the process. And for The Miz: Well, that’s a wrap! WINNER: Dolph Ziggler

Ryan Murphy: Do you hate The Miz or do you love to hate The Miz? Responders to his particular brand of nauseating self-devotion seem to fall into one of two camps, which, in turn, dictates whether or not you’d like to see him get his teeth kicked in or escape to infuriate another day. Personally, I love to hate the guy. And though I wouldn’t consider myself a full-on Mizfit, I do hope he continues this Hollywood jerk title run. Sorry, Dolph. WINNER: The Miz

James Wortman: For months, Dolph Ziggler has been set on proving that The Showoff is not simply a braggadocios moniker, and his greatest opportunity to truly “steal the show” came at WWE Battleground, when he had seemingly ensnared the vacant Intercontinental Championship in a massive Battle Royal. But then there was The Miz, who strategically (or cowardly) stole The Showoff’s win and the title in the process. With that loss still fresh in his mind, Ziggler is looking to wipe the smug grin off the oh-so-Hollywood titleholder’s “moneymaker.” In fact, it’s The Awesome One’s obsession with his pampered mug that could prove to be his undoing. Dolph, get ready for your close-up. WINNER: Dolph Ziggler

John Clapp: As Intercontinental Champion, The Miz appears more confident and comfortable than he has looked in years. Unless, of course, anybody makes any sudden movement toward his “moneymaker.” Though part of me wishes these guys would agree to not hit each other in the face in a quirky SummerSlam homage to Shawn Michaels vs. Rick Martel, I very much believe The Miz isgoing to get smacked in the face, courtesy of Ziggler’s superkick. WINNER: Dolph Ziggler

6.) Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton

@JoeyStyles: When Randy Orton decimated Roman Reigns on Raw, I saw the sinister sociopathic Viper of old who dropped Stephanie McMahon with an RKO and kicked Vince McMahon in the skull. I saw Orton shed the skin of a constantly complaining pawn to reveal The Apex Predator that terrorized WWE for years. Nonetheless, sometimes the future is clear and unavoidable. Roman Reigns is the future Face of WWE. The Superman Punch and Spear will eventually be as iconic as Hulk Hogan’s Legdrop, Steve Austin’s Stone Cold Stunner and John Cena’s Attitude Adjustment. Orton is Reigns’ first serious test, and it’s one that he’ll pass. Then it’ll be onto the next test … and the next … and the next. WINNER: Roman Reigns

@HowardFinkel: Success has come at a rapid pace for Reigns, and he has worked hard to attain it. And I would suggest that is playing with the psyche of Orton. Over these past few weeks, The Viper has been at odds with any number of people, all because of Reigns’ fast ascension. Orton will be more than ready for this Sunday, and will get his hand raised after all is said and done. WINNER:Randy Orton

Ryan Murphy: This should be the match historians one day point to as the stepping-off point on Roman Reigns’ journey to the Promised Land. Should be. Trouble is, Randy Orton plays spoiler better than anyone in WWE, and he’ll see to it that Reigns’ ascendance is denied — at least for one night. WINNER: Roman Reigns

James Wortman: A battle born out of WWE World Championship aspirations has become one of WWE’s most personal rivalries as Randy Orton seeks to halt the seemingly meteoric rise of Roman Reigns. Yet, even though The Viper is one of the most diabolical ring strategists of all time — he didn’t become a “Legend Killer” by being a nice guy — Reigns is definitely heating up as a solo competitor. Look for WWE’s Apex Predator to get bumped down the food chain as Reigns proves himself as a future contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Title. Believe that. WINNER: Roman Reigns

John Clapp: Randy Orton isn’t the most relatable dude. (Can you relate to a perfectly symmetrical, 6-foot-5 genetic freak who considers himself The Apex Predator?) Yet, even I think he’s justified in feeling bent out of shape about his current station in WWE.Right or wrong, Reigns derailed Orton’s plans for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship rematch. Who knows how else the equally symmetrical Reigns threatens Orton? Unfortunately for the powerhouse, it’s when The Viper feels threatened that he seems to be at his most dangerous. WINNER: Randy Orton

7.) Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon

@JoeyStyles: This match is the most difficult to predict. Not because I have any doubt Brie Bella can wipe the mat with Stephanie McMahon, who hasn’t competed in more than a decade and was never a full-time competitor. It’s because Stephanie is a principal owner of WWE and, therefore, a person who determines the continued employment of the referee, timekeeper, ring announcer and everyone else who works for this company. There is also the little matter of Triple H’s potential ringside presence. Brie’s sister Nikki wouldn’t be able to neutralize The Game and, quite frankly, neither would an injured Daniel Bryan. I don’t see any way The Authority doesn’t do everything in their unlimited power to humiliate Brie. WINNER: Stephanie McMahon

@HowardFinkel: I believe that despite all that’s transpired between these two outside the ring, their issue must be decided within the confines of the squared circle. And I don’t buy for a second that, despite her extended break from competition, Stephanie will show signs of ring rust. She’s a student of “The Game,” literally and figuratively speaking (see the two Pedigrees she delivered on Raw weeks ago), and that edge will go a long way toward her gaining the win over Brie. WINNER: Stephanie McMahon

Ryan Murphy: Has there ever been a pay-per-view match featuring a McMahon family member that wasn’t both wholly entertaining and completely bug nuts? I can’t think of one, and Stephanie’s not about to under-deliver on a family reputation. Look for this one to resemble that internet meme of Batman slapping the guano out of Robin, and expect Mr. McMahon’s baby girl to prevail. WINNER:Stephanie McMahon

James Wortman: Based on what we’ve seen over the past few weeks, there doesn’t appear to be a version of this match that doesn’t end with Stephanie McMahon’s celebratory “Yes!” chant mockery. Not only did the Authority matriarch punish and humiliate both Bella Twins with a pair of Pedigrees on Raw, she masterminded a scenario this past Monday night that resulted in Brie being taken out of the arena in handcuffs. With both a physical and, now, psychological edge over the newly reinstated Diva, Stephanie will undoubtedly assert her dominance over the “Total Divas” star in Los Angeles. That’s just the harsh reality. WINNER: Stephanie McMahon

John Clapp: Stephanie McMahon is nothing if not methodical, but even the queen is capable of a misstep — in this case, stoking the fire under Brie Bella, who was already plenty incensed long before Megan Miller became known to the WWE Universe. Stephanie succeeded in getting the Bella twin sent to jail, but at SummerSlam, the only locking up we’ll see is in the form of Stephanie getting tied in the “Yes!” Lock. WINNER: Brie Bella

8.) WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match
John Cena (c) vs. Brock Lesnar

@JoeyStyles: It’s hard to pick against John Cena in any match because of his 15 World Championships. However, I don’t think people fully realize how impressive Brock Lesnar’s conquests are when Paul Heyman boasts about them week after week. Since returning to WWE, Lesnar has only been defeated when knocked cold by a steel chain or steel steps. Unless the rules of this match change or Cena manages to hit Lesnar with his car without the referee seeing it, the man who conquered The Undertaker’s WrestleMania Streak will defeat John Cena for his fourth WWE Championship. WINNER: Brock Lesnar

@HowardFinkel: Make no mistake about it: Brock Lesnar is The Beast Incarnate and John Cena is not WWE World Heavyweight Champion via a fluke! At the beginning of this week, I felt Lesnar was going to reach the top of that championship mountain this Sunday. However, Cena’s impassioned and emotional message that he delivered last Monday on Raw swayed my thinking anew. Now I truly believe that Cena will dig down deep and find a way to outlast the grizzled Lesnar. Truth be told, it’s all or nothing for Cena in a few short days! WINNER: John Cena

Ryan Murphy: Most folks will be eyeballing this one with the same heart-in-your-gullet anticipation you get while watching a video of a gazelle lowering its head to take a drink of croc-infested water. I hesitate to assume that John Cena will be the gazelle in this scenario — the guy has beaten Brock Lesnar before — but I’ve watched enough Animal Planet to know how this is gonna turn out.WINNER: Brock Lesnar

James Wortman: This one’s gonna be ugly. Becoming even more of a force of nature after snapping The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania 30, Brock Lesnar won’t rest until he has pried the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from the mangled form of John Cena at SummerSlam. Not even The Champ’s unparalleled passion and dedication to the WWE Universe will save him from the horrors that await Sunday. Paul Heyman’s right: WWE is Brock’s house now, and Cena’s about to be shown the door. WINNER: Brock Lesnar

John Clapp: I believe Paul Heyman when he says John Cena will endure an unworldly beating at the hands of The Anomaly Sunday. But lose the WWE World Heavyweight Championship? To Brock Lesnar, a guy to whom the title is less about representing WWE and more about a bigger payday? I think not. The Champ is fighting for preservation, and I can’t reasonably foresee a scenario in which he gets pinned or made to submit, even by the baddest ass-kicker on the planet. WINNER: John Cena
